THE DENIS HURLEY LIBRARY

The Institute’s library holdings of about 38 000 titles and about 250 Journals (including non-current Journals) are housed in the modern and air-conditioned Denis E. Hurley Library, named after Archbishop Denis E. Hurley OMI (1915 - 2004), Archbishop of Durban (1947-1993) and Chancellor of the then University of Natal 1993-1998. A keen intellectual, at the official opening of the library, Archbishop Hurley remarked that he always had a love affair with books. He also described the 1950s as an era in which books literally poured out of the printing works of the world, enlightening the mind of the church in preparation for the second Vatican Council.

The opening times for the Library are:
08.00 - 16:30 Monday to Thursday
08.00 - 13:30 Friday

During the long holidays, i.e. July, December and January, the opening times are 08.00 - 12:30 - It is advisable to phone before hand.

Among the ancient biblical commentaries are books in French, German, Italian and Latin. The strong areas of the Library are on Catholic History, Scripture, Patristics, Spirituality, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology and African Studies.

Audio-visual facilities include a Video/DVD viewing room in which the Library's growing collection of Videos and dvd 's may be seen. This collection includes numerous amateur Videos as well as many commercially made Videos and DVD's on a broad range of subjects.

Photocopying facilities are available in the Library and make use of the "card" system to operate the photocopier. Cards are available at the Issue Desk.
