ABOUT THE SJTI

St. Joseph 's Theological Institute is an accredited institute of higher learning having been registered with the South African Department of Education a s a Private Higher Education Institution under the Higher Education Act (1997). Our registration Certificate Number is 03HS03.

The Institute is home to more than 200 students and 40 staff members, comprising a mosaic of different cultures from more than 20 African countries, with frequent representation from Asia, Europe, South and North America . Apart from the cultural richness of our members, we are also blessed with the rich diversity of charisms with most students coming from more than 20 male and female religious congregations within the Catholic Church. There are also several diocesan and lay students. (For detailed annual statistics go to our Year Book page. )

St. Joseph 's equips candidates for ordained and non-ordained ministry particularly within the Catholic Church. We are also part of an ecumenical cluster comprising the School of Religion and Theology of the local University (UKZN), the Evangelica l Seminary and ourselves. One fruit of this collaboration is Cluster Publications which makes authentic contextual theological works accessible to our students and associates at affordable prices.

In terms of qualifications we confer four degrees in Theology (BA and BTh), Philosophy (BA) and religious Studies (BA); and award diplomas in Philosophy and in Religious Studies. Under the auspices of the University of KwaZulu-Natal we also educate students for honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees. In terms of publications, our Grace and Truth is a widely read theological periodical. Our Denis Hurley Library is up to international standards and boasts a collection of more than 37 000 volumes and 108 periodicals. Considering the rich reading resources of the various student residences associated with the Institute we have 60 000 books and 150 journals available to our students. We are also integrated into the data base of the local University and have access to the country wide interlibrary loan system thereby making most published works and dissertations accessible to our staff and students.
